Protecting Hardwood Floor From Dog Claws

My family recently moved into a house where almost the entire downstairs floor is hardwood.  It was flawless when we first arrived, but since then, our easily excitable German Sheperd/Rottweiler/Husky mix has been tearing it up.

Whether it's a squirrel in the backyard, or the mailman in the front, she finds something to use as an excuse to skitter across the floor. She gets started so fast that she just runs in place, her feet failing to grip on the floor and scratching it beneath her.

A couple of weeks ago, the floor was refinished, so my dad became really fixed on finding a way to keep her from messing it up again.  Instead of just keeping her outside 24/7, we looked into dog booties.

We ended up getting a pair from the nearby pet store for only $20.  The guy selling them warned that she would probably just pull them off, but she didn't even try to.  For the first day, she walked funny in them, but after that she was the same as always, minus the scratching up the floor part.

Here's a few pictures of her with them on. Sorry about the quality, I just snapped them real fast with the webcam on my laptop.

We take her booties off when she goes outdoors, and after it is dark outside and she can't see anything outside that would make her run through the house.  The floor still manages to get a few bumps here and there, but I guess that comes with having hardwood. And we can't expect to keep our floors perfect forever.

Now she dislikes not having her booties on. She probably likes how warm they keep her feet.

So if your dog has been scratching up your floors, I would suggest looking into dog booties. (:

Does anyone have any thing different they use to keep their dog from scuffing up the floor?
